Blair Thompson leads the way with 13 points and seven rebounds
EASTON, Pa. - The Columbia men's basketball team picked up its first road win of the season on Monday night, defeating the Lafayette Leopards, 57-45, at the Kirby Sports Center. With the victory, the Lions improve to 5-9 on the season.
Blair Thompson led the Lions with 13 points on 4-of-8 shooting while knocking down two threes. He also added and seven rebounds, two steals, and a block. Avery Brown also reached double-figures, posting 11 points and two rebounds.
With the score tied 8-8 five minutes into the first half, Brown and Geronimo Rubio De La Rosa buried back-to-back triples to put the give the Lions a six-point lead. That lead would grow as high as eight, before Lafayette (1-11) cut the deficit to just two points with 55 seconds left in the half thanks to a jumper from Eric Sondberg. Thompson would answer the Leopard run by nailing a three-pointer on the Lions' last possession of the half to give Columbia a five-point edge heading into the locker room.
The Lions' defense was firing on all cylinders in the second half, holding Lafayette to just 26% shooting, including just 2-of-15 from downtown. This allowed Columbia to slowly extend its lead throughout the period, seeing it reach as high as 16 after a layup from sophomore Jake Tavroff at the 6:21 mark.
Despite the Leopards best efforts at a comeback late in the second half, the Lions' defense was just too much and Columbia was able to hold on to secure the win. Tavroff put the finishing touches on things with a layup that narrowly beat the shot clock buzzer with five seconds left in the game.
Rubio De La Rosa had a solid all-around game, contributing six points, seven rebounds, and four assists, while attempting only one field goal. Tavroff tallied the first double-digit rebounding game of his career, collecting 10 boards to go with six points.
Columbia will have a couple weeks off before returning to action on Wednesday, December 28 to close non-conference play with a tilt against Maryland Eastern Shore. Tip-off is scheduled for 4 p.m. at Schiller Court. Tickets can be purchased here and the game can be viewed on ESPN+
