NEW YORK/BOSTON — A pair of Columbia Track & Field men set program records as
David Vorbach (3,000m) and
Jahi Hernandez (200m) each rewrote the record book in their respective races, as the Lions had solid finishes across the board at the Rutgers Indoor Invitational and the BU David Hemery Valentine Invite over the busy weekend of Feb. 11-12.
Â
Vorbach, who has now set two school records in the past two weekends, clocked a program record time of 8:00.77 in the 3,000-meter run at the Rutgers Indoor Invitational. While at the BU Invite, Hernandez broke his own school record in the 200-meter dash, finishing with a time of 21.48,
Â
The Lions also swept the one-mile run at the Rutgers Invite, with
Nikki Vanasse and
Michael Danzi each taking first in the race. Not to be outdone,
Phoebe Anderson took first in the 3,000m at the Rutgers Indoor Invitational, giving the Lions another sweep in a distance track event.
Â
Overall, the Lions had four first place finishes and 14 top-five finishes at the RU Indoor Invite. While in Boston, Massachusetts, Columbia had a combined six top-10 finishes across seven events.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED (WOMEN): Vanasse clocked a time of 4:42.16 in the one-mile at the Rutgers Invite, finishing two seconds ahead of the second place finisher. In the 3,000m, Anderson led the way with a time of 9:23.54, but she was not alone in the top-five as
Sofia Camacho finished third (9:34.11) and
Linnaea Kavulich crossed right behind Camacho in fourth, clocking a time of 9:39.46.
Â
At the BU Invite,
Sydney Goldson posted a top-five finish in the 400-meter dash, clocking a time of 55.61, the third best mark in the Ivy League this season. And back in New York, New York at The Armory,
McKinlee Morris posted a mark of 44-00.50/13.42m in the shot put to finish third in the event. While in the 1,000m, Columbia had a pair of runners finish inside the top-five as
Delaney Sanacore (2:52.85) and
Seneca Willen (2:53.36) finished third and fourth respectively.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED (MEN): Vorbach, who set the school record in the 5,000m last week at the Dr. Sander Columbia Challenge, crossed the line with another program record time of 8:00.77 in the 3,000m to take that event. Vorbach's time is the sixth best in the Ivy League so far this season.
Â
Columbia's first place finish by Vorbach in the 3,000m was not the only top finishing Lion in the race as the top-five is made up of four Lions. Joining Vorbach was
Jack Bennett (8:19.63),
Ben Kuhn (8:19.82) and
Anish Nanjappa (8:21.16) who finished third through fifth respectively in the race.
Â
In Boston, Hernandez cruised to a school record of 21.48, breaking his previous record of 21.58 in the 200m. The time, which is the sixth best in the league this season, placed Hernandez sixth in a tough field.
Â
Danzi clocked a winning time of 4:01.40 in the one mile run, finishing almost four second ahead of the second place finisher. In the 1,000m Juston O'Toole gave the Lions a second place performance, finishing with a time of 2:26.68 and he was joined inside the top-five by
Solomon Fountain's fourth place time of 2:27.13.
Â
At The Armory, in the shot put,
Patrick Passalacqua tossed a mark of 53-11.00/16.43m to finish seventh in the top "Championship" field. And in the shot put's "College" field
Yoosang Kim cracked the top-five with a third place toss of 50-05.50/15.38m
