VILLANOVA, Pa. – The Columbia men's soccer team (1-8-0, 1-1-0 Ivy) came up just short on the road at Villanova (1-6-4) Tuesday afternoon as the Wildcats scored in the 90th minute to escape with a 3-2 win.
Villanova got on the scoreboard first Tuesday as Kyle Dixon put the ball in the net on a header from a set piece in the 18th minute. Jason Bouregy was credited with the assist to give the Wildcats an early lead.
The lead didn't last long though as Columbia responded quickly with a goal in the 20th minute. Joao Lima stole the ball away with the goalkeeper out of position as Villanova looked to move toward midfield. Lima moved quickly with the ball and fired it past the Villanova goalkeeper to even the score and record his first goal of the 2024 season.
The Wildcats reclaimed the lead in the 38th minute on another header goal. O'Neil Dawes scored this time on an assist from Karson Vazquez to put Villanova up, 2-1 heading into halftime.
Columbia controlled the ball better throughout the second half and outshot Villanova, 7-4 with several good looks at the goal. Overall, Columbia outshot the Wildcats, 14-12 with both teams recording five shots on goal.
Following a few missed opportunities, Jack McDaid broke through with a goal in the 87th minute to tie the game for the second time. Luke Zielinski earned the assist as he passed the ball off to McDaid, who launched the equalizer through the bottom, left side of the goal.
With time winding down, Villanova scored in the final minute to steal a heartbreaker against Columbia. Jorge Garcia scored on a free kick from just outside the box in what proved to be the dagger.
Alexander O'Brien got the start and played all 90 minutes in the net. O'Brien tallied two saves while allowing three goals.
The Lions hit the road this weekend for an Ivy League match at Dartmouth. First kick is set for 4 p.m. Saturday in Hanover, New Hampshire.
