The women's 6k begins at 11 a.m. with the men's 10k to follow at noon
HOPKINTON, N.H. —The Columbia cross country program is set for the 2024 NCAA Northeast Regionals, which will begin on Friday morning. After two consecutive years being hosted by the Lions at Van Cortlandt Park, this year's competition moves to New Hampshire to be hosted by UMass Lowell at Hopkinton State Fairgrounds. The day will start with the women's 6k which is set to begin at 11 a.m., with the men's 10k to follow at noon.
Teams from all across the northeast region will make the trip north for the meet, with 40 men's teams and 42 women's teams set to compete. A full list of the participating programs with starting box assignments can be found on the NCAA's website, HERE.
Two weeks ago, Columbia raced in the Ivy League Heptagonal Championships hosted by Princeton in New Jersey. The star of the show for the Lions was Phoebe Anderson, who earned her first career Ivy League Cross Country Championship, finishing with a time of 19:52.7 in the women's 6k. Talha Syed led the men, winning a bronze medal with a third-place finish in the 8k thanks to a time of 22:57.5. Both Anderson and Syed were named First Team All-Ivy for their efforts. This was the fourth consecutive First Team All-Ivy nod of Anderson's career. In addition, both Syed and Anderson received Academic All-Ivy recognition. Full results from the 2024 Ivy League Heps can be found HERE.
The top two scoring teams in both the men's race and women's race will automatically qualify for the NCAA Championships next weekend. In addition, the top four individual finishers not on a qualifying team will also qualify for the NCAA Championships. The top 25 individual student-athletes will receive All-Region recognition.
Last year at East Regionals, Anderson qualified for the NCAA Championships for the third consecutive year. She placed third in the 6k with a time of 19:46.2 and received All-Region honors. Anderson will look to take home the title for the first time this year, and qualify for NCAAs for the fourth time in her career.
Last year, three other Lions earned All-Region recognition, two student-athletes from the women's team and one from the men's team. Nikki Vanasse finished in 12th place to earn the honor, narrowly missing out on qualifying for the NCAA Championships with a time of 20:09.4. Right behind her was Elia Ton-That, who was named All-Region after finishing 15th with a time of 20:15.8. Syed paced the men, finishing 16th in the 10k with a time of 30:05.7 to garner All-Region recognition.
