Men’s Basketball Drops Final Non-Conference Matchup at Rutgers

The Lions finish non-league play 11-2; Best start to a season in program history since 1969-70

PISCATAWAY, N.J. — Columbia men's basketball fell to Rutgers, 91-64, on Monday inside Jersey Mike's Arena.

Reigning Ivy League Player of the Week Geronimo Rubio De La Rosa led the Lions with 17 points. Kenny Noland posted his 11th double-figure scoring game of the season with 16 points and a 4-5 mark from three-point range. His four threes and eight rebounds were career-highs.

Rutgers (8-5, 1-1) opened up the game on a 12-4 run and led by as many as 13 with 5:34 left in the first half.

The Lions stayed in the game and cut Rutgers' lead to 41-35 on a Zine Eddine Bedri lay-up. The Scarlet Knights held a six-point lead at the break.

Rubio De La Rosa poured in 11 points in the first 20 minutes on 5-9 shooting. Columbia managed to shoot 50 percent in the half.

Midway through the second half, Rutgers went on a 10-2 run to make it a 64-48 game with 11:56 remaining. Dylan Harper's fourth three-pointer of the game forced a Columbia timeout and capped the run. Harper finished with 16 points. Scarlet Knights standout guard Ace Bailey dropped a game-high 24 points on 11-18 shooting.

Later in the half, Rubio De La Rosa ended a nearly four-minute scoring drought for the Lions by nailing a corner triple. Rutgers pulled away to a 78-58 lead at the last media timeout of the game with 3:57 left.

Bedri had eight points and six boards for Columbia. Avery Brown chipped in nine points.
