Tar Heels score once in each half

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — The Columbia women's soccer team went on the road to take on No. 2 North Carolina on Sunday at Dorrance Field. The Lions proved to be a test for the national powerhouse but were ultimately defeated, 2-0.

North Carolina (7-1-0) bounced back from its first loss of the season just a few days ago at Duke. The Tar Heels broke through in the 25th minute on a goal by Kate Faasse, her team-leading fifth of the season. Bella Sember sent a ball from the left side of the box through to Faase near the top of the area. Faase drilled it into the top-right corner.

Following the goal, Columbia (0-2-3) put together one of its best spells of the game. The Lions pressured with the ball in the attacking third and earned three corner kicks in a span of five minutes. Sophia Cavaliere delivered Columbia's best shot of the game during that time, firing off a blast from distance that UNC keeper Clare Gagne had to make a diving effort to save from the top-right corner. Gagne wound up with two saves on the day.

Columbia got off one more shot on goal the rest of the game, which came in the second half off a free kick by Cavaliere. The Lions took six shots on the afternoon to 13 for UNC. Columbia keeper Lauren Rodriguez picked up four saves.

UP NEXT
Columbia returns home for an interborough matchup on Thursday against Fordham (4-1-1). The opening kick at Rocco B. Commisso Soccer Stadium is scheduled for 7 p.m.
