The Lions led the entire way despite only scoring 17 second-half points
NEW YORK — Columbia men's basketball staved off a late comeback in a 54-49 victory against Boston University on Tuesday night inside Schiller Court at Levien Gymnasium.
Columbia (3-1) led the entire way against the Terriers (2-3) in the teams' first meeting since 2002. Miles Franklin and Ryan Soulis led the Lions with 10 points each. Mason Ritter followed with nine points and five rebounds. Zine Eddine Bedri pulled down 12 rebounds to go with six points and three assists.
The Lions survived an 8:54 scoring drought down the stretch as the Terriers (2-3) brought Columbia's commanding 17-point halftime lead all the way down to two with 1:21 remaining in the game.
Kenny Noland went to the free throw line with 22 seconds to play and knocked down both shots, pushing the margin to four. Then with eight ticks left, the Terriers' Chance Gladden missed a lay-up, and Bedri came down with the rebound to seal a second straight home win.
After a 15-3 run by the Terriers at the start of the second half, BU suddenly trailed by seven points. Columbia called timeout, and fired back with a 7-0 run. During the spurt, Soulis hit a fadeaway jumper, blocked a Terriers layup, and then scored an and-1 lay-up, all in consecutive plays.
BU was 2-18 from three-point range and went 0-5 from deep in the second half.
Blair Thompson picked off a BU pass to open the game, allowing Bedri to muscle his way into the paint on the other end for the first points of the night. Ritter drilled his first career three-pointer off a feed from Thompson, kickstarting a 14-0 Lions run that put the Lions up 16 with 12:17 left in the first half.
After running the clock down, the Lions went to Connor Igoe to take the final shot of the half and he delivered, sinking a buzzer-beating three that gave Columbia a 37-20 lead at halftime. The Lions held BU to just 7-of-28 shooting in the first half.
The Lions visit Lehigh on Friday at 6 p.m. from Stabler Arena. The game will air on ESPN+.
