Men’s Basketball’s Comeback Falls Short in Overtime at Stony Brook, 77-73

STONY BROOK, N.Y. — Despite trailing by 14 points with 2:54 to play, Columbia men's basketball stormed back to force overtime, but ultimately fell to Stony Brook on Tuesday night, 77-73, at Stony Brook Arena.
Down 61-47, the Lions (9-2) rattled off a remarkable 18-4 run over the final 3:14 of regulation. Ryan Soulis' layup with 27 seconds left capped the comeback and the teams went to overtime tied at 65-65. It was Columbia's first overtime game since Dec. 28, 2022 against Maryland Eastern Shore.
Stony Brook started overtime with four straight points. Columbia went 3:32 into overtime without points before Gerard O'Keefe drilled a triple. Stony Brook led by five with 19 seconds left in the extra period, but the Lions still wouldn't go away. Blair Thompson nailed a clutch three to make it a two-point game with three ticks left. The Seawolves (7-3) hit two free throws at the end to seal the victory.
Kenny Noland dominated with 24 points, nine assists, and four rebounds. Soulis (12 points) and Connor Igoe (10 points) also added double-figure scoring.
Stony Brook opened the game on a 10-0 run before Noland laid in Columbia's first points nearly seven minutes in. With 5:47 left in the half, the Seawolves broke off a 7-0 run to lead 28-13 at the under-four media timeout.
The Lions went 0-9 from three-point range in the opening 20 minutes and trailed 30-17 at the break.
Columbia hung tough to start the second half, cutting the deficit to 10 when Noland hit the Lions' first three-pointer of the night with 15:23 to play.
The Lions continued to chip away, using their press defense to set up offense. Columbia got the Stony Brook lead to within six with 9:21 to go on a Miles Franklin layup. But the Seawolves instantly responded and pushed their lead back to double-digits less than two minutes later.
Columbia broke through late and exploded on an 11-1 run to bring it back within six with 2:05 remaining. Noland had a stretch of eight straight points for Columbia.
Columbia resets with a 12-day break before returning to action on Sunday, Dec. 21 at California. Tip-off from Haas Pavilion is set for 5 p.m. ET.
