Brown Slips Past Men’s Basketball in Overtime, 86-80

The Lions were unable to grab a lead in the extra period; Saturday’s game featured 17 lead changes and 15 ties
PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Columbia men's basketball fell in overtime at Brown, 86-80, on Saturday afternoon at Pizzitola Sports Center.
Despite fouling out in overtime, Kenny Noland dropped a team-best 18 points on 7-12 shooting. Blair Thompson had 12 points, while Miles Franklin (11 points) and Gerard O'Keefe (10 points) rounded out Columbia's double-figure scorers. Connor Igoe had nine points and a team-high eight rebounds.
The teams went neck-and-neck down the stretch in regulation and Thompson buried a three-pointer with 40 seconds left to tie the game at 72-72.
The Lions (12-5, 1-2) got a stop and had two chances to win when Thompson drove but got blocked out of bounds. Columbia inbounded the ball with nine ticks left but couldn't convert. Columbia went to overtime for the second time this season.
After a Noland layup to bring Columbia within a point, Brown hit five straight free throws to lead 81-75 with 1:03 to go in overtime. The Lions never led in overtime. Brown went 10-12 from the free throw line in the extra five minutes to help secure the victory.
The Bears went up 53-51 with 12:05 to play after a quick 5-0 run for their first lead since late in the first half.
Columbia flipped the momentum with a 7-0 spurt of its own to lead 64-61 with 6:51 to play. Brown shot 55.6 percent from the field in the second half. Overall the Bears converted on just on three-pointer out of 13 on the afternoon.
A back-and-forth opening few minutes had Columbia in front, 9-8, at the first media timeout of the day after Igoe drove the lane for a layup.
The tight first half featured 14 lead changes and seven ties. Columbia took its largest lead right before the horn as Thompson rebounded a desperation heave from Franklin from half court and laid it in as the clock hit zero.
The Lions completed the opening 20 minutes on a 7-0 run and led 42-36 at halftime. Columbia outrebounded Brown in the first half, 23-15.
Brown converted on three layups and a dunk over an 8-3 span to bring Columbia's lead to one three minutes into the second half.
Columbia continues its three-game road trip on Monday at Yale. Tip-off from John J. Lee Amphitheater is set for 2 p.m.
