The Lions shot just 3-17 from deep in the loss
NEW HAVEN, Conn. — Columbia men's basketball was defeated by Yale on Monday afternoon, 91-74, at John J. Lee Amphitheater.
Kenny Noland's 13 points paced a balanced offensive attack for Columbia (12-6, 1-3). Mason Ritter added 12 points and went 6-6 from the free throw line, while Ryan Soulis and Connor Igoe each contributed 11 points.
The Lions struggled from three-point range, shooting just 17.6 percent to Yale's 50.8 percent mark. Columbia managed to go 22-32 (68.8 percent) from inside the arc. The Bulldogs (14-3, 3-1) outrebounded Columbia, 31-26. Yale's Nick Townsend had a game-high 25 points.
Once Columbia held a 14-13 lead on a monstrous alley-oop from Igoe to Richard Nweke, Yale rattled off three straight three-pointers to lead by eight with 10:24 remaining in the first half. Columbia used its first timeout of the day to stop the momentum.
Yale's largest lead of the opening half came with roughly two minutes left until the break. Townsend capped his 15-point first half with a triple to give the Bulldogs a 44-32 lead.
Shortly after, a Blair Thompson free throw and a Ritter layup brought the margin to eight at the half. Columbia was just 2-11 from deep in the opening 20 minutes of play.
The Lions trailed 57-39 with 15:34 to play, during a point in which they went 5:21 without a field goal early in the second half.
Down the stretch, Columbia was only able to get Yale's lead down to 12 when Ritter hit a hook shot with 7:39 to go. The Bulldogs' 21-point advantage with 3:58 left was their largest of the afternoon.
Columbia concludes its three-game road trip on Saturday at Dartmouth. Tip-off from Leede Arena is set for 2 p.m.
