The Lions ended the game on a 7-0 run; Noland notches first career double-double
HANOVER, N.H. — Kenny Noland scored a career-best 28 points and recorded his first-ever double-double in Columbia men's basketball's 79-69 victory at Dartmouth on Saturday afternoon at Leede Arena.
After Dartmouth (9-9, 3-2) clawed back to make it a three-point game, the Lions (13-6, 2-3) put the game on ice by finishing with a 7-0 run over the final two minutes. Noland hit a layup and after a stop on defense, Ryan Soulis stormed down the paint and slammed home a dunk. The spurt was capped by three free throws from Hampton Sanders with under a minute to go.
Dartmouth made four straight shots to cut Columbia's lead to 53-48 at the under-12 timeout in the second half. A Soulis jumper with 7:04 left in the game blew open a game-high 17-point lead for Columbia. But Dartmouth's 12-0 run made it a one-possession game with 2:13 remaining at 72-69.
Noland played all 40 minutes, had a career-high 11 rebounds, and went 11-11 (also a career high) from the free throw line. Columbia snapped a three-game losing streak and shot 42.1 percent on the day. The Big Green were 22-58 from the field (37.9 percent).
"Props to Dartmouth, they're a really good team," Noland said postgame on ESPN+. "Defensively we had some adjustments we made and we wanted to stick with our offense a little more and it showed up in the second half."
Blair Thompson had 10 points and six rebounds, including the 500th board of his career. He's the first Lion to reach the 500-rebound mark since Mark Cisco in 2012-13. Sanders poured in 17 points.
Five different Lions hit three-pointers over the first nine minutes on the day and Columbia led 19-11 at the under-12 timeout in the first half.
The first 20 minutes featured seven lead changes and three ties. Midway through the period, Columbia survived a scoring drought of 5:50. Gerard O'Keefe drilled a three-pointer as the horn sounded to tie the game at 31-31 heading into halftime. Both teams shot 11-29 (37.9 percent) from the field in the first half.
Columbia went on an 11-2 run early in the second half and led 42-35 with 16:03 to play. The Lions opened up their largest lead of the day up to that point a minute later when they led 48-37 with a Sanders three-pointer.
Columbia returns home to host Penn on Friday, Jan. 30 at 7 p.m. and Princeton on Saturday, Jan. 31 at 6 p.m.
