Lions’ second-half push comes up empty
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — The Columbia men's soccer team saw its five-match unbeaten streak come to an end on Saturday afternoon, falling 1-0 to Harvard in its Ivy League opener at Jordan Field .
Crimson forward Dylan Tellado scored the game's lone goal in the 38th minute, halting Columbia goalkeeper Aris Taki's career-opening shutout streak at 397 minutes and 9 seconds . Harvard improved to 2-5-1 overall and 1-1-0 in Ivy League play, while Columbia moved to 3-2-2 and 0-1-0 in Ivy action .
Neither team generated a shot through a cagey opening 10 minutes as both sides felt each other out . Harvard earned the match's first corner kick in the 15th minute, which Taki punched away to clear the threat . Columbia created its first major opportunity five minutes later, working the ball across the face of goal to the far post, where Sage Kinner's sliding effort was just out of reach .
Columbia controlled much of the possession moving into the attacking third, but Harvard nearly struck first in the 25th minute when a shot from a tough angle hit the post . Taki made a close-range save on the rebound before the Crimson's follow-up goal was waved for offside .
The Crimson eventually broke the deadlock when Tellado converted unassisted to put the hosts ahead, 1-0 . Tellado collected a short pass from near the far touchline, drove toward the top-center of the box and fired a right-footed shot that squeezed between the diving hands of Taki and the left post.
Harvard held a narrow 5-4 edge in shots during the opening period . Crimson goalkeeper Jason Broome made two first-half saves to keep the Lions off the board heading into halftime .
The Lions turned up the pressure right out of the break, nearly equalizing just two minutes into the second half . Henning Myrvang collected a long ball over the top from Columbia's defensive half and slotted a pass across the top of the box to Stepan Kapranov, whose shot was mishit wide left .
In the 66th minute, Andrew Hilton II launched a deep throw into Harvard's half that was headed into the air. Myrvang got a foot to it to pop it back up, but Broome came off his line to grab the ball an end the threat.
Taki kept Columbia within striking distance in the 77th minute, making a diving save to his right to deny a one-touch shot during a dangerous spell of Crimson pressure .
Columbia mounted a furious push in the closing minutes, winning its first corner kick of the match in the 86th minute . Off a short corner sequence, the ball settled to Luke Zielinski in front of goal, but his shot was pinballed through a crowded box and deflected out toward midfield . The Lions earned another corner in the 87th minute and pushed again in the 88th minute when Andres Garcia sent a cross into the side netting, but Harvard weathered the late attack to hold on for the clean sheet .
The Lions have a quick turnaround, hosting Brown in a rescheduled contest this Tuesday, October 6. The match, originally slated for last Saturday, September 26, was postponed due to the nor'easter that affected the region. Tuesday's kickoff at Rocco B. Commisso Soccer Stadium is slated for 6:30 p.m.
