
Volleyball Falls to Harvard in Three Sets

Seven Lions record at least two kills in balanced attack
NEW YORK — Columbia volleyball battled throughout the match, but fell to Harvard, 3-0 (25-19, 25-21, 25-20), Friday night at Levien Gymnasium.
The Lions (6-7, 0-4 Ivy) were led by Avery Jones, who recorded a match-high nine kills on 12 attempts, hitting .583. Charlotte Gravlee and Elena Maynulet added seven kills, while Danica Nordlicht finished with six. Clara Yu and Claire Mo combined for 28 assists, with Yu recording a team-high 15.
Harvard (12-1, 3-1 Ivy) hit .258 as a team and was led by Kayla Nwabueze and Ryleigh Patterson's seven kills. Defense at the net was the difference for the Crimson, who finished with 11.0 total blocks on the night, eight from Ryleigh.
In the opening frame, Columbia traded points with Harvard early before the Crimson built a 9-4 lead. The Lions responded with a 3-0 run, highlighted by a kill and a service ace from Maynulet. Columbia continued to battle, tying the set at 13-13 on a kill by Gravlee. Harvard answered with a 5-0 run to take an 18-13 lead and held on to close out the set, 25-19. Jones led Columbia with three kills in the opening set.
Harvard opened the second set with a 5-0 run. Columbia worked its way back with a 4-0 stretch, including two kills from Gravlee, to cut the deficit to 8-4. The Lions continued their push, tying the set at 9-9 on a service ace by Evie Naumann. Columbia stayed within reach throughout the middle of the set, pulling within two at 16-14 on a Jones kill. Harvard responded to extend its lead and held off a late Columbia rally to take the set, 25-21.
In the third and final set, Columbia stayed close early and tied at 8-8 on a kill by Kylee Eze. The Lions then took a 12-10 lead following a three-point run that included a service ace from Elise Hiemstra and a kill by Gravlee. Harvard responded with a 4-0 run to regain control and later extended its advantage to 21-15. Columbia cut the deficit to 22-19 with consecutive points, including a pair of blocks involving Gravlee and Eze, but Harvard closed out the set, 25-20.
Columbia returns to action Saturday evening when the Lions host Dartmouth. First serve between Columbia and the Big Green is scheduled for 5 p.m.
