Volleyball Sweeps Stonehill to Wrap Up Non-Conference Play

Lions dominate Skyhawks at the net
FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Columbia volleyball team got back into the win column thanks to impressive play at the net. The Lions tallied a season-high 12 total blocks, 5.5 from first-year middle blocker Danica Nordlicht.
Columbia (6-3) needed just 38 kills on a season-low 77 attempts, but it was more than enough as the Lions held Stonehill (3-11) to an .021 attack percentage. Overall, the Lions were efficient, hitting .377 on the day. First-year outside hitter Alexia Cornea led the team in kills with a match-high 11 on 19 swings.
It was the play at the net that set the tone, however. Nordlicht recorded 2.5 blocks in the opening set, including a pair of solo blocks. Charlotte Gravlee, Avery Jones, Kylee Eze, and Cornea each had multiple blocks.
Stonehill (3-11) was led by Haley Herdon's eight kills. Kendra Sawyer led the team with 15 assists. Kristina Bishop had a team-high seven digs.
The Skyhawks opened the first set on a 3-0 run. Following a service error by Stonehill, the Lions went on a 7-2 run to take control of the set. At the first media timeout, the Lions pushed their lead to eight following back-to-back blocks by Nordlicht. The two sides settled into back-and-forth play, and Madison Hsieh closed out the set with the first of three aces.
The second set was close, with Stonehill making it a one-point game following a kill by Samantha Loyd. The Lions took control with a 9-0 run that started with a kill from Eze to make it 8-6. Columbia pushed the lead to 10-20 following a block by Jones and Nordlicht. A Cornea kill made it 25-11 to end the frame.
Columbia closed out the match on the strength of its attack. The Lions smashed 17 kills in the set, five from Eze and four from Cornea. The two sides traded points throughout the first half of the set. Back-to-back attack errors from the Skyhawks gave the Lions a 15-13 lead at the media timeout. From there, the Lions went on a 10-3 run, with Eze finishing it off with a kill.
The Lions return to action on Saturday, September 26, when they begin Ivy League play at Cornell. First serve between the Lions and Big Red is scheduled for 3 p.m.
