Softball Splits with Rider

After Adelfio retired all three Rider batters in the top of the first, Maiya Chard-Yaron led off the Columbia half with a sharp single to left. After Lexie Costic walked, Valerie Smith smoked a one-out double to left-center to bring home Chard-Yaron and Costic, giving the Lions a 2-0 edge.
After Ciji Rich reached on an error and Kacy Krisman was hit by a pitch, Lacie Nelson ripped a single through the right side to make it 3-0 and Hilary Parsons picked up an RBI on a fielder's choice to give Columbia a 4-0 lead.
Adelfio (10-6) gave up just five hits and struck out four over seven innings, keeping the ball in the infield throughout the game, allowing the Columbia outfielders only one putout during the contest.
In game one, Rider posted single runs in each of the first three innings, but Chard-Yaron pitched in and out of trouble nicely to limit the damage, stranding eight Rider runners on base over the first three innings.
Down 3-0 in the fifth, Columbia loaded the bases with one out. Chard-Yaron ripped a sharp grounder up the middle, but Rider shortstop Katy Mills, playing in, just got a glove on it, deflecting the ball toward the second base bag. Mills followed the ball as it rolled toward the base, and just got there ahead of a sliding Kim Krisman to make the second out, essentially ending the Lions' threat.
Columbia (13-14-1) will return to action on Sunday, April 2, when the Lions host Fairfield in a doubleheader at Columbia Softball Stadium. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
