NEW YORK – The Columbia baseball team used a strong start from senior pitcher Mike Weisman to pick up a 4-1 victory over Dartmouth in game on a blustery day in Upper Manhattan. Weisman tossed 6.2 innings of scoreless ball, allowing just two hits while striking out two.
Both starting pitchers were effective early, but the Lions (9-10, 1-1) began the scoring in the bottom of the third. Will Savage stretched a single into a double on what looked like a casual single and scored on a poke to leftfield by Jordan Serena.
Columbia added to its lead in the fourth when Gus Craig tripled off the wall in right, narrowly missing a solo homer. Randell Kanemaru drew a walk to put runners on the corners for Loghan Boyher. Boyher hit a ball to the hole that second baseman Justin Fowler tracked down moving to his right, but the junior catcher just beat out the throw to first, extending the margin to 2-0.
Serena picked up a leadoff double, similar to Savage's in the third. Craig followed with a single to bring in Serena and wound up on third after the ball squirted by the rightfielder. David Vandercook made it 4-0 with double off the high wall in right-center to bring in Craig.
Weisman was lifted after giving up a double with two outs in the seventh. Bryce Barr came on and hit the first batter he faced and walked the next one to load the bases. However, Barr got out of the inning unscathed with a ground out to second.
Dartmouth (3-15, 1-1) threatened again in the top of the ninth when Matt Robinson issued back-to-back walks to start the inning. After a fly out which helped the runner on second advance to third, Adam Gauthier hit a slow grounder towards second base for an infield single to break up the shutout bid.
Harrisen Egly then came in out of the bullpen, but walked the first batter he faced to load the bases and bring the go-ahead run to the plate. However, Egly settled in and struck out the next two hitters for his third save of the season.
Vandercook went 3-for-4, while Serena was 2-for-4 and added his ninth stolen base of the year. Craig finished 2-for-4.
The Lions are back at it against Harvard on Sunday, March 29 at Robertson Field at Satow Stadium. Game time of the opener has been moved back to 1 p.m.
