NEW YORK – The Columbia baseball team wrapped up its four-game sweep of Cornell with a 20-5 triumph on Sunday afternoon. The Lions scored 18 times in the fourth and fifth innings to improve to 23-12 overall and 14-2 in Ivy League. Columbia and Penn are tied at the top of the Gehrig Division standings and will face off next weekend four times in a home-and-home doubleheader format.
The 20 runs was the most scored by a Columbia team since they plated 21 at St. John's in March of 2010. The Lions sent 14 men to the plate ad scored 11 runs in the fifth inning alone.
Joey Falcone belted his eight home run of the year, a grand slam during the big fifth, becoming the first Lion to hit a long ball with the bases full since Alexander Aurrichio in 2011.
Logan Boyher and Jordan Serena also had four RBI on the day.
Columbia fell behind 2-0 in the top of the second, but a two-run double by Boyher started a run of 20-unanswered scores.
John Kinne, who finished 2-for-4 with three runs, gave the Lions the lead for good with a base-hit in the fourth. A dropped fly ball in leftfield by the Big Red (9-25, 6-1) loaded the bases and opened the flood gates for Columbia.
Serena followed with a single to bring in a pair and after two walks and a wild pitch that brought in Boyher, Gus Craig joined in on the action with a sharply hit single off the glove of the first baseman. A fielder's choice brought in the final score of the inning.
Falcone came up with one out in the fifth when he planted his long ball into the Harlem River towards right-center. Kinne came through again with another RBI hit and Boyher notched his second double of the game for two more runs.
Robb Paller capped the Lions' scoring with his fourth big fly of the year to extend his hitting streak to 14 games and on-base streak to 20 games.
Mike Weisman earned the victory (4-1), tossing five innings of four-hit, two-run ball. He struck out two.
Prior to the series with Penn, the Lions will wrap up non-conference play with a doubleheader at Fordham on Wednesday, April 22. First pitch of game one is slated for 3:30 p.m.
