NEW YORK – The final non-conference games of the season will play out today for the Columbia softball team, when the Lions take on Rider in a 3 p.m. road doubleheader.
This past Sunday, Columbia split a home doubleheader with Cornell to improve to 14-24 overall and 6-10 in the Ivy League. Tonia Wu picked up her seventh win of the season in the first game, giving up three runs in a complete game, her ninth of the season. Wu has had an impressive sophomore campaign, leading the Lions in wins while posting a 2.72 ERA and striking out 83 in 118.1 innings of work.
Wu also got it done at the plate on Sunday, going 4-for-6 in two games and driving in a run in the game one win. First-year Taylor Troutt drove in two on a first-inning single during the win, while classmate Olivia Parker went 2-for-4 with two runs.
The hottest hitter for Columbia as of late has been senior Alix Cook. Over the last ten games, the third baseman is hitting .444 with four doubles, six runs and a perfect 3-for-3 in steal attempts.
Rider comes into the contest with a 9-27 record, fresh off a split with MAAC rival Saint Peter's, a team Columbia swept last week. This will not be the final non-conference doubleheader for the Broncs, who take on cross-town rival La Salle of the Atlantic 10 next week.
Dana Sensi is the team leader at the plate, batting .391 in 36 games. In the circle, Delany DeMello and Megan McDonough have both tallied over 72 innings. DeMello has a 4-7 record with a 3.67 ERA, while McDonough is 3-10 with a 5.30 ERA.
After the series with Rider, Columbia will play four games with Penn this weekend. The first doubleheader will be on Saturday, with Senior Day festivities kicking things off before the 12:30 p.m. start. On Sunday, the Lions will visit the Quakers in the final pair of the season at the same time.
