BRONX, N.Y. – Robb Paller and Gus Craig each homered twice as the Columbia baseball team downed Fordham, 16-3, Wednesday afternoon on the road. The original schedule called for a pair of two seven-inning games, but due to rain in the forecast it was changed to one nine-inning contest.
Paller also recorded seven RBI after going 4-for-6 in the rout.
The Lions (24-12) went yard a total of six times on the day with Joey Falcone jacking his ninth and Randell Kanemaru belting his third, respectively. On the day, Columbia notched 18 hits and four individuals had multiple knocks.
Paller opened the scoring with a solo shot in the top of the first inning. In the third, Paller and Craig took the Rams (15-24) pitcher deep to extend the margin to 4-0.
The Lions sent 12 men to the plate in the fourth and Falcone and Craig went back-to-back to highlight a six-run frame and extend the margin to 10-0.
After Fordham scored in the bottom half of the fifth with a solo home run of its own, Kanemaru belted a home run with the bases full one game after Falcone ended a four-year grand slam drought.
Paller put the finishing touches on the win with his sixth and seventh RBI of the day in the eighth.
Columbia used seven pitchers on the afternoon with starting pitcher Bryce Barr picking up the win (2-0). Barr went two innings and allowed one hit and struck out two, but factored into the decision because it was pre-determined the Lions would use multiple hurlers.
Next up for the Lions will be a four-game series with Penn. Saturday will feature two games at Robertson Field at Satow Stadium on Saturday, April 25 that can be seen on ESPN3. Sunday, the series will conclude with a twinbill at Meiklejohn Stadium in Philadelphia on the Ivy League Digital Network. Game one on both days are slated for 1 p.m. starts.
