NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Columbia baseball team erupted for 13 hits, including three home runs, to come away with a 16-2 victory over Yale in game one of a doubleheader.
Randell Kanemaru went 1-for-2 with four RBI, while Gus Craig and David Vandercook each knocked in three runs, respectively.
On the hill, George Thanopoulos scattered four hits in seven innings and struck out six to improve to 2-3 on the year. Both runs allowed were unearned.
The Lions (12-10, 4-1) struck first in the top of the second. Joey Falcone stayed hot with a double down the rightfield line. Two batters later, Vandercook added a two-bagger of his own to bring in Falcone and came around to score after Nick Maguire hit an opposite-field single to left-centerfield.
In the third, Columbia picked up more breathing room, highlighted by a two-run homer by reigning Ivy League Player of the Week, Craig, to give Thanopoulos a five-run cushion. Earlier in the frame, Jordan Serena singled and moved to third after a wild pitch and passed ball. Falcone grounded into a fielder's choice to score Serena.
The Lions batted around in the fourth, plating five runs on six hits. Nick Maguire belted his third long ball of the season and Robb Paller added a two-run double to extend the margin to 10-0.
Kanemaru jacked his first career homer, a three-run blast, during Columbia's six-run fifth inning to effectively put the game out of reach.
Yale (8-12, 2-5) scored once in the fifth and seventh innings.
