KINGSTON, R.I. – The Columbia baseball team took the second half of a doubleheader against Brown, with an 11-3 win after an 8-0 victory in the first game. With the pair of wins, the Lions improve to 15-10 overall, and 7-1 in Ivy League play.
Columbia sent 12 batters to the plate in the top of the first and scored six times on just two hits in the inning. Five walks, a hit batter and error were the culprit of most of the trouble for the Bears (6-18). However, Logan Boyher came up with arguably the biggest hit of the frame, a two-run single, to cap the inning scoring.
Brown cut the deficit in half with runs in the second, third and fourth innings, but more control issues by the Bears' pitching staff allowed the Lions to balloon the lead once more in the top of the fifth.
Two hit batters and a single loaded the bases for Boyher, who worked a walk. Will Savage then reached on an error and Jordan Serena followed with an RBI single to restore the six-run cushion.
In the sixth, Columbia added two more runs when Robb Paller knocked in a solo shot, followed by an RBI single from David Vandercook. With the loss, Brown falls to 6-18 on the season, and 2-6 against opponents from the Ancient Eight.
Picking up the win for the Lions was senior Mike Weisman, who went five innings, giving up two earned runs on three hits while striking out three.
The Lions return to action for a mid-week tilt at St. John's on Wednesday, April 8. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
