NEW YORK – The Columbia softball team will welcome six new members starting in the fall, announced today by head coach Jennifer Teague. Sandy Kaul, Reilly Metzger, Bonnie Schipper, Jordan Townsend, Krystin Wong and Alex Yule will all begin their careers as a Lion in August.
"I am super excited about our first recruiting class," said Teague. "All six are very talented on the defensive side, and this class is also extremely gifted offensively. We found a good mix of speed and power and are excited to start working with them in the fall. We are also thrilled about the families that will join our softball family."
Sandy Kaul | OF | Cranbury, New Jersey | West Windsor Plainsboro South
A New Jersey product will join the Lions in Sandy Kaul, who went to high school at West Windsor Plainsboro South, just outside of Princeton. A four-year varsity starter and team captain during her senior season, Kaul helped lead the team to the CVC Championship in 2012, and was a 2014 Princeton All-Packet player. Kaul comes to Columbia hoping to explore the business world, having earned her schools Girl Scout Gold and Silver Award. The daughter of Sandeep and Kiran Kaul, she also has a sister, Priyanka.
Reilly Metzger | 2B/3B | Boerne, Texas | Champion High School
A four-year varsity starter at second base and shortstop, Reilly Metzger comes to Morningside Heights from Champion High school in suburban San Antonio. Metzger played her final two seasons in Texas after transferring from Severna Park high school in Maryland. She led her team to the Class 5A Texas State Playoffs after batting .488 with seven doubles and an on base percentage of .618 during her senior season. During her junior season, Metzger earned All-District honors, along with being named honorable mention All-League as a junior and sophomore. Metzger has family ties to Columbia and the Ivy League, as her uncle, Gene Larkin, played baseball for the Lions before a Major League stint with the Minnesota Twins, and her sister, Grayson, is a current utility player for Brown. The infielder is the daughter of Kelly and Eric Metzger.
Bonnie Schipper | C/3B | Alexandria, Virginia | Hayfield Secondary School
Columbia gets another four-year starter in high school in Bonnie Schipper. Jordan Townsend will join Shelby Unger as the second member of the Lions from Yorba Linda, California. A four-year letter winner as a third baseman at Yorba Linda, Townsend was the captain of the 2015 squad, earning her school's Scholar Athlete award every year in high school. Townsend helped the team achieve a No. 2 national ranking in 2013, when she earned first team All-League honors, while also playing club ball for the OC Batbusters. She comes from a softball family, as her sister, Taylor, is a member of the softball team at UConn, while her mother, Tracy, played collegiately at Arizona. Townsend's family also includes her father, Dale, and Taylor's twin brother, Trevor.
