GAME ONE RECAP: Columbia 4, Cornell 3
It was Cornell who jumped on the board first in game one, putting across one run on three hits including a RBI double by Rebecca Kubena to give the Big Red a 1-0 lead heading into the second.
The Lions responded in the top of the second, however, as Alexandra Yule got things going with a two-out single before Bonnie Schipper could drive a RBI triple through the right side and off the glove of the second-baseman to score Yule and tie the game at 1-1.
The momentum continued in the top of the third for the Lions as Krystin Wong led off the inning with an opposite-field solo blast to right to give Columbia a 2-1 advantage.
Still holding on to the one-run lead in the top of the sixth, Taylor Troutt was able to send a base hit through the left side to lead off the inning. After a sac bunt to move Troutt to second, Alexandra Yule was able to rip a RBI double into left field before scoring later that inning on a wild pitch to make it a 4-1 lead.
From there, Tonia Wu was able to hold the Cornell offense at bay until the seventh when the Big Red began to threaten. After a leadoff walk to Kim Dolhon, Olivia May was able to send a double down the left-field line to put a pair on with nobody out.
While Wu was able to get the next two outs, Meg Parker was able to send a two-RBI single into center to cut the Columbia lead to 4-3 before a comebacker to Wu ended the game to seal the 4-3 victory.
Alexandra Yule led the way after going 2-for-2 with a double, a walk and a RBI while scoring a pair of runs. Bonnie Schipper also picked up a pair of hits for the Lions, going 2-for-3 with a RBI and a triple.
Wu (6-8) earned the win after throwing all seven innings, allowing three runs on eight hits while striking out three. Meg Parker (4-9) took the loss after pitching a complete game, giving up four runs on eight hits while striking out six.
GAME TWO RECAP: Cornell 7, Columbia 2
Cornell jumped on the board first in game two behind a pair of doubles in the bottom of the first to give the Big Red a 1-0 lead. With the help of a pair of hits and a Columbia error, the Big Red was able to extend its lead to 2-0 on an unearned run in the bottom of the second.
Despite a pair of hits by the Lions, the Big Red was able to double its lead in the fourth with a two-run home run by Olivia May to give Cornell a 4-0 lead.
Unfortunately the Big Red added three more runs in the bottom of the sixth on a three-run homer to left by Kim Dolhon, just past the outstretched glove of Maura Lynch, to extend the Cornell advantage to 7-0.
Down to their final out in the top of the seventh, the Lions began to rally with back-to-back two-out hits by Krystin Wong and Kerry Cook before a Cornell error helped extend out the inning.
With the bases now loaded, Maddie Gott was able to capitalize on the Big Red mistake as she drove a two-out, two-RBI single into left to score a pair and cut the deficit to 7-2. Unfortunately Cornell was able to end the inning with a foul out to first, sealing the 7-2 win to force the split.
Krystin Wong picked up two of the team's five hits in the loss, finishing the game 2-for-3 with a run scored.
Meg Parker (5-9) earned the win after throwing a complete-game shutout, allowing five hits while striking out one. Tessa Kroll (4-12) took the loss after throwing 6.0 innings, allowing six earned runs on 11 hits while striking out a pair.
The Lions will return to action on Wednesday, April 20, as they welcome Manhattan to the Columbia softball field for a doubleheader starting at 3 p.m.
