ITHACA, N.Y. – The Columbia women's soccer team kicked-off Ivy League play on Friday evening with an impressive 2-0 shutout road victory over Cornell. Dominating on both sides of the pitch and scoring two goals in the opening 22 minutes of play, the Lions roared to their first road win of the year.
Columbia capitalized on its first corner kick opportunity with a goal in the third minute for a 1-0 lead. Natalie Ambrose sent a beautiful kick into the box where Emma Anderson settled a bouncing possession and blasted a shot straight into the net for Columbia's earliest score this season.
Disrupting a clear attempt from the box by the Cornell back line was Columbia forward Natalie Neshat. The senior simultaneously followed the theft with a shot into the top of the net in the 22nd minute for her sixth goal of the season to put the Lions up 2-0.
Led by Sophie Whitehouse in goal, the Columbia defense registered its third shutout in its first road victory of the year. The Lions held the Big Red to just one shot on goal and four total shots through 90 minutes. The win marks the first in Ithaca over the Big Red in the Tracey Bartholomew era
Up next, Columbia (4-4-1, 1-0 Ivy) return to Rocco B. Commisso Soccer Stadium to hosts Wagner on Sunday, Sept. 14 at 3 p.m.
