NEW YORK –In the 99th minute, Natalie Neshat sent in a beautiful shot over the pressing goalkeeper, off a deadeye assist from Natalie Ambrose, to lift the Columbia women's soccer team to a 1-0 overtime victory over Brown (8-3-1) on Saturday, Sept. 30. In a spectacular finish, the Lions snapped a five-game Bears win streak to remain unbeaten at Rocco B. Commisso Soccer Stadium (5-0-1) and move to 2-0 in the Ivy League.
A stellar all-around defensive performance, led by Sophie Whitehouse in goal, propelled the Lions to its fourth-consecutive shutout victory at home and the fifth on the year. The stifling backline of Reilly Lucas, Natalie Ambrose, Amalya Johnson, and Taylor Penn, along with four saved by Whitehouse, set the tone for a smothering Columbia showing.
With an 18-8 shot advantage, the Lions also applied pressure offensively, strong looks by Emma Anderson and Emily Koe in regulation kept the Bears on their heels for much of the evening. Neshat's score in overtime marks a team-high eight goals on the season, as Ambrose earns her third assist.
Columbia improves to 6-4-1 with the win and will return to action on Friday, Oct. 6 at 7 p.m. as they host Penn at Rocco B. Commisso Soccer Stadium.
