The Lions improve to 2-0 in Ivy League play taking advantage of goals by Jordyn Geller and Amaris Hemmings.

PROVIDENCE, R.I — With just 44 seconds left in regulation, senior Rachel Alexander sent the ball down the middle of the field to sophomore Jordyn Geller who sailed a shot into the right side of the net to score the game-winning goal in a 2-1 victory over Brown on Saturday evening at Stevenson-Pincince Field.

The win lifts Columbia to 5-4-1 overall with an unblemished 2-0 record in Ivy League competition. Brown falls to 4-6-1, 0-2 Ivy.

"You've got to give Brown a lot of credit," said Columbia head coach Tracey Bartholomew. "We were weathering a lot of big shots in the box, but that finish from Rachel to Jordyn was unreal. Jordyn has been getting a lot of good looks at goal, playing well and working so hard, so to have that result and get that final piece was great to see. But it was really a total team effort to come away with that win. Brown is a good team and they gave us a lot to handle."

In the 18th minute, Columbia took a corner kick from the right side and after the initial ball in was cleared out, a re-fire was set in from the top of the box by Kathryn Coritz which was batted around inside the six to find the foot of Cayla Davis who sent it to senior Amaris Hemmings to hammer home the goal. The goal was Hemmings' first of the season and fifth of her career.

A strong defensive effort from Columbia in the first half kept the Bears from breaking through the scoring barrier, but after the break Brown came back firing.

"After that scramble in the box where Amaris hit in, we were still playing pretty well but Brown came back with some adjustments," said Bartholomew. "Their backs were against the wall and they were sending a ton of people forward on every set piece and you're just trying to weather it. I thought our two center backs did a lot to manage that."

The Bears put up 13 shots in the second half, but none would get past Columbia's senior goalkeeper Sophie Whitehouse until the 88th minute as Brown's Rebecca Rosen flicked in a header off a free kick to knot the score at 1-1.

In the final minute of regulation, Alexander picked up the ball at midfield, sending it through to Geller who put the game away. Geller's goal marked her third of the season.

Senior goalkeeper Sophie Whitehouse recorded her fifth win of the season, tallying six saves in the victory.

Columbia will close its two-game road stretch next Friday, Oct. 5, traveling to Philadelphia to take on Penn at 4 p.m. ET.
