Men’s Basketball Falls at No. 3 UConn on Monday

Thompson and Franklin led the Lions with 10 points each
STORRS, Conn. — Columbia men's basketball dropped its first game of the season, 89-62, to No. 3 UConn on Monday evening inside Gampel Pavilion.
Blair Thompson and Miles Franklin each led the Lions (1-1) with 10 points. Connor Igoe and Zine Eddine Bedri poured in nine. Mason Ritter paced Columbia on the glass with seven boards. UConn (3-0) shot 56 percent from the floor and out-rebounded the Lions, 34-32.
Thompson started 3-3 from the field and nailed his first two three-pointers. Columbia held a brief lead for over three minutes early on when Thompson and Bedri buried consecutive threes to put the Lions in front, 6-2.
UConn clawed back and led 14-13 at the under-12 media timeout. The Huskies drilled back-to-back triples to boost its margin and force Columbia to call a timeout. UConn's run expanded to 14-0 over a 2:41 span. The Huskies led 50-27 at the half.
The Lions were able to cut the lead down to 20 with 10:42 to play when Gerard O'Keefe hit a free throw and then a three-pointer on the next possession.
Fresh off Ivy League Rookie of the Week honors, Franklin continued to impress. After a quiet first 20 minutes, the first-year tallied eight second-half points. Franklin's night was topped with a poster slam dunk with 8:42 to play.
The Lions host UMass Lowell on Thursday at 7 p.m. in Columbia's home opener. Columbia is 85-37 all-time in home openers and has won 10 of its last 17 openers in Levien Gymnasium.
