The Lions erased a nine-point first half deficit; Noland pours in career-high 24 points
NEW YORK — Columbia men's basketball came from behind to top UMass Lowell, 86-72, in its home opener Thursday night inside Schiller Court at Levien Gymnasium.
The Lions (2-1) had four players score in double-digits and three set career-high marks. Columbia has now won 11 of its last 18 home openers. Columbia dominated the glass, grabbing 48 rebounds (23 offensive) to the River Hawks' 25.
Kenny Noland led the way with a career-high 24 points on 7-of-15 shooting from the field and 4-of-8 (.500) from behind the arc. Mason Ritter set career-highs with 14 points and nine rebounds to go with two blocks.
Zine Eddine Bedri recorded 19 points, five rebounds, and three steals. Gerard O'Keefe was the fourth Lion in double figures, scoring a career-high 16 points on 6-of-9 shooting and dishing out a personal-best four assists.
The River Hawks (1-3) began the night with a 9-0 run as turnovers and back-to-back corner threes grilled the Lions early on. Ritter broke the silence with a post hook, then attacked the paint again for two free throws. Ritter capped off his 6-0 run with a dunk off an offensive rebound.
After a 7-0 River Hawks run forced Columbia to take a timeout, the Lions responded with a 6-0 run to bring it to a three-point game. Noland hit two threes en route to scoring 12 points in the first half.
The Lions dominated the glass out of the gate with 30 first-half rebounds, but were troubled by 14 turnovers and allowing 5-of-6 three-point shooting by the River Hawks. UMass Lowell held a 36-31 halftime lead.
Bedri scored the team's first four points in what would become an electric 16-point second half for him. After Bedri tied the game at 42-42 with a three with 16:41 to play, Ritter scored in the paint to give the Lions their first lead of the game.
The Lions shot a blistering 19-of-29 from the field in the second half. In a five-minute span later in the half, the Lions went on an 18-3 run to put them up 57-45. Columbia had just three turnovers in the second half.
