News/Notes
Opening Tip-Off
Columbia earned its fourth straight win on Sunday afternoon against Longwood, 95-70. It's the most points the Lions have scored on a Division I opponent since Feb. 8, 2019, at Harvard.
Kevin Hovde is the first Columbia head coach in his debut season to win five of his first six games since Lou Rossini started 20-0 in his first season in Morningside Heights in 1950–51.
The Lions and Stags meet for the third time, with the series split at a game apiece. Columbia faces Sarah Lawrence for the fourth time with the Lions leading the series, 3-0.
Last Time Out
Blair Thompson buried a career-high 25 points and Columbia drilled a single-game program-best 18 three-pointers in the Lions' 95-70 domination of Longwood on Sunday afternoon from Schiller Court at Levien Gymnasium. Columbia is off to a 3-0 start at home for the second straight season.
Thompson and Kenny Noland led the way to combine for 13 three-pointers as the Lions shot 50 percent from three-point range. Columbia cleaned up on the glass again, out-rebounding the Lancers, 39-28. The Lions led for over 38 minutes. Four of Columbia's five wins this season have been by double-digits.
Breaking The Glass
The Lions have out-rebounded an opponent by more than 20 boards twice this season (plus-23 vs. UMass Lowell on Nov. 13 and plus-25 at Lehigh on Nov. 21). That margin is Columbia's largest against a Division I opponent since Nov. 15, 2010, vs. Maryland Eastern Shore, when the Lions were 44-21 on the boards against the Hawks. The 48-rebound performances are the most boards in a game for Columbia against a Division I foe since Dec. 12, 2022 (at Lafayette). The last time Columbia recorded multiple 40-rebound games in a season against Division I opponents came in 2017-18.
Columbia also had 23 offensive rebounds on Nov. 13, marking the first time the Lions secured over 20 offensive boards since Jan. 16, 2023, vs. Cornell. Zine Eddine Bedri and Blair Thompson are each averaging over six rebounds per game.
The Lions lead Ivy League teams in combined team rebounds per game (41.7), offensive rebounds per game (13.2), and rebounding margin (13.0).
Noticing Noland
Senior guard Kenny Noland is off to a strong offensive start to 2025-26, averaging a team-best 17 points per game. The Apex, N.C. native has trumped his career-high in points twice already through six games this season and has recorded three 20-point performances. Noland's 102 points this season rank fifth among Ivy League scorers and his 19 three-pointers lead the league.
Double-Double Duo
In Friday's win at Lehigh, Zine Eddine Bedri (21 points, 12 rebounds) and Blair Thompson (11 points, 10 rebounds) became the first pair of Lions to each record a double-double in a game since Dec. 3, 2008, vs. Wagner (Jason Miller and Asenso Ampim).
How Many Miles Can He Go?
First-year guard Miles Franklin shined in his collegiate debut in the Nov. 7 season opener. The Vienna, Virginia native came off the bench and in 18 minutes of action tallied 13 points on 5-5 shooting from the floor. Franklin knocked down two three-pointers and recorded three rebounds, two blocks, and a steal.
Franklin followed up on Nov. 10 at No. 3 UConn with a 10-point showing (eight in the second half) on 5-8 shooting. His performance included a posterizing dunk over Silas Demary Jr. with 8:42 remaining in the game. He was named Ivy League Rookie of the Week.
Franklin made his first career start in Nov. 13's home opener and logged 18 minutes. He has scored double-figures in half of this season's games. His five steals on Nov. 23 vs. Longwood are the most by a Lion since Avery Brown had five on Nov. 15, 2023, against SUNY Delhi.
1,000 Points Watch
Columbia's Avery Brown (862 points) and Kenny Noland (847 points) each are closing in on the 1,000-point mark for their careers. The last Lion to reach 1,000 points was Geronimo Rubio De La Rosa on Feb. 23, 2024. Columbia has 30 all-time 1,000-point scorers.
Series History - Fairfield
Columbia is 1-1 all-time against the Stags and defeated Fairfield at home last season, 85-72. In 2015's matchup at Fairfield, the Stags escaped with an 82-81 overtime victory.
Series History - Sarah Lawrence
