LAST TIME OUT
The Lions swept visiting Cornell thanks to a dominating Sunday afternoon performance, winning 10-2 in five innings. Columbia hit a season-high four home runs in the contest – two from Payton Shimansky. In the circle, Jordan Hill was an out away from tossing her second complete game shutout of the weekend. She had to settle for the win, giving up just four hits and two runs over five innings.
STAT LEADERS
The Lions bats are red-hot entering this weekend. Columbia raised its team batting average by nine points to .307 after hitting .417 as a team last weekend against Cornell. The .307 mark is third in the Ivy League. Five Lions are hitting north of .300, with senior Cami Neal leading the pack with a .420 batting average. Neal also leads the team with hits (42), doubles (10), home runs (5) and RBI (32).
In the circle, Columbia has a staff ERA of 5.30. First-year pitcher Caylene Nguyen has been brilliant out of the pen for the Lions, her 4.55 ERA is tops on the team, she also had two saves tied for the team lead. Jordan Hill's eight wins lead the squad, as does her 78.1 innings pitched and seven complete games.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Neal was named the Ivy League Player of the Week for the second straight week. The native of Gilbert, Ariz., was instrumental in the Lions ' three-game sweep over conference rival Cornell, hitting .875 (7-for-8) with five runs scored and four driven in. After earning Ivy League Player of the Week honors on April 21, she raised her batting average from .380 to .420 with this week's stellar performance. Of her seven hits, she hit two extra-base hits, including her fifth home run of the season -19th of her career, moving her into sole possession of fourth all-time in Columbia history.
WHO IS HOT
With apologies to Cami Neal, who is hitting .556 over the last 10 games, the hottest Lion on the diamond right now is starting pitcher Jordan Hill. Over the previous 10 contests, she is 4-2 with a 2.48 ERA. Last weekend, Hill went 2-0 with a 1.40 ERA. In 10 innings pitched she scattered seven hits and two earned runs, while holding opponents to a .189 batting average.
SENIOR DAY
The Lions will celebrate senior day before the 12:30 p.m. first pitch on Sunday at approximately 12:05 p.m. Seniors Caroline Palys, Maddie Souza, Cami Neal, and Jordan Hill will be recognized on the field with their family and friends.
WHAT'S AT STAKE
Plenty is up for grabs in the final weekend of the Ivy League season. Only Princeton has claimed a spot in the Ivy League tournament and currently sits in first place in the standings. However, three teams are tied for second, with the Lions one of them. One win this weekend will see Columbia secure one of the three remaining spots in the Ivy League tournament. However, three wins this weekend coupled with a series sweep by Brown over Princeton, will see Columbia clinch a share of the Ivy League title.
SCOUTING DARTMOUTH
The Big Green have lost three straight after being swept at home by Harvard last weekend. At 10-8 in conference play, Dartmouth is on the outside looking in at the Ivy League tournament.
The Big Green are hitting .288 as a team, which is fifth in the conference. Five players are hitting .300 or better, led by senior outfielder Alaana Panu's team-high .357 average. Panu leads the team in runs scored (36) and runs driven in (32). First-year catcher Marilyn Beauvais leads the squad with five home runs.
In the circle, Dartmouth has a staff ERA of 4.79 which is fourth in the Ivy League, they are holding opponents to a .275 average. Sophomore Jensin Hall leads the team in nearly every statistical category including ERA (3.06), wins (10), innings pitched (121.1), strikeouts (104) and opponents batting average (.206).
THE SERIES
In a series that dates to the 2000 season, Saturday will be the 55th meeting between the two squads. All-time, the Big Green has a 31-23 advantage in the series; however, Columbia has had recent success, having won six of the last 10 matchups. Last timeout, Dartmouth defeated the Lions 22-1 in five innings on May 4, 2024.
