Moncion nets first goal of the season in setback

NEW YORK — Columbia women's soccer mounted a late comeback effort against Fordham on Thursday night, but ultimately came up short in a 2-1 setback at Rocco B. Commisso Soccer Stadium.

The two sides played a scoreless opening 45 minutes, with the Lions generating a pair of shots on goal late in the half. Maya Nuwayhid and Dema Elder each forced saves from Fordham goalkeeper Addison Green, while Samantha Mahoney made a save of her own to send the match into halftime scoreless.

Fordham (3-2-1) broke through in the 64th minute when Liv Johnsen scored to give the Rams a 1-0 lead. Just 16 seconds later, Sophia Banzon doubled the advantage off an assist from Renata Mercedes to put Columbia in a 2-0 hole.

Columbia (1-3-3) responded in the 73rd minute when Sammie Moncion scored her first goal of the season to cut the deficit in half. The Lions continued to push for the equalizer, with Evelyn Javers forcing Green into a save in the 82nd minute before the Lions generated two more attempts over the final six minutes, but could not find the back of the net.

Despite the loss, Columbia finished the night with a 12-11 advantage in shots, including a 9-8 edge in the second half. The Lions put five attempts on target compared to four for the Rams.

The Lions have a quick turnaround, heading to West Long Branch, New Jersey, on Sunday to take on Monmouth. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at Hesse Field on the Great Lawn.
