The Lions began the scoring in game one on three straight hits. Valerie Smith singled to lead off the inning and Ciji Rich flared one to right field to put runners on first and second for Amy Cass. Cass then ripped a double down the left field line, scoring Smith. Rich was close behind, but was thrown out at home on a series of near-perfect relays to hold Columbia to one run.
Starter Jackie Adelfio (7-5) held Stony Brook hitless until the top of the fourth inning when Suzanne Turek led off with a double off the left field fence. Hayley Durham followed with a two-run homer that landed just within the foul pole down the right field line to give the Seawolves a 2-1 lead.
Stony Brook struck for its second home run of the day in the fifth, on a two-run blast by Kelsi Fanelli that made it 4-1. The Seawolves added two runs in the sixth to make it 6-1 going into the bottom of the seventh.
The Lions mounted a rally in the seventh, as Hilary Parsons and Lexie Costic reached on singles and Keli Leong drove a double to deep center to score both runners. That was as much as Columbia would get, however, as the Seawolves captured game one.
Stony Brook jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the third and added single runs in the fifth and sixth and four runs in the eighth to win the second game, 8-0. Maiya Chard-Yaron (2-4) was credited with the loss for Columbia, but did have two hits at the plate and Leong added another double for the Lions.
The Lions return to action at Columbia Softball Stadium on Saturday, March 25 when they will take on Marist in a doubleheader. Game time is slated for 1 p.m.
