PRINCETON, N.J. - In the second softball doubleheader of the weekend at Princeton, the Tigers got by Columbia, 3-2, in the first game, before a 2-0 game two win sealed the sweep. With the pair of losses today, the Lions fall to 11-21 (5-7 Ivy League) on the year.
Game one: Princeton 3, Columbia 2.
In game one, Columbia held a 2-0 lead into the fifth inning, but Princeton scored three runs in the final two innings to top the Lions, 3-2, in the first of two games today.
Columbia got on the board first, when Liz Caggiano came around on an infield single from Kayla Shimoda in the top of the second.
After a two-out double by Kerry Cook in the top of the fourth, Alix Cook drove in her sophomore sister on a single to center, giving the Lions a 2-0 advantage.
The lead would remain 2-0 until the bottom of the fifth, when Princeton found the scoreboard on an RBI single off Tonia Wu. The Tigers would take the lead in the bottom of the sixth with two runs in the inning to lead 3-2.
Kerry Cook and Shelby Unger would reach base in Columbia's last at-bat, but the two were unable to score in the inning, preserving the Princeton win.
Wu took the game one loss, despite a solid effort in the circle. The sophomore went 6.0 innings, giving three runs (two earned) on six hits.
Game two: Princeton 2, Columbia 0
The Lions were unable to sustain a rally in game two, falling by a score of 2-0.
Alix Cook got on in the first inning with a double to left center, but was left stranded. Much like Cook in the first, Taylor Troutt led off the second with a double, but was unable to be driven in.
In the bottom of the fourth, Princeton was able to break the scoreless tie, plating two runs off of Tessa Kroll.
Facing a 2-0 deficit in the seventh, Mackensy Lakian tried to start a rally with a one-out single through the right side, her second of the game. With Olivia Parker on to pinch-run, the first-year was left stranded as a lineout and a strikeout ended the game.
For the game, Kroll went 3.1 innings and gave up two earned runs before being replaced by Kayla Maloney. Out of the bullpen, Maloney went 2.2 scoreless innings and struck out two.
The Lions will have plenty of chances for revenge next week in six home games. On Thursday, Saint Peter's visits the Columbia Softball Stadium for a 3 p.m. doubleheader, before Cornell comes to New York City for two 12:30 p.m. doubleheaders on Saturday and Sunday.
