NEW YORK - The Columbia softball team took two from Saint Peter's in a home midweek doubleheader, with a 1-0 win in the first game, and a 10-2 victory in five innings in game two.
Game one: Columbia 1, Saint Peter's 0
Pitching dominated the first contest, as the two teams combined for eight total hits and one run. Two first-year late-inning relplacements helped Columbia to the 1-0 win, in Olivia Parker and Maura Lynch.
After Tonia Wu retired the Peacocks in order in the top of the seventh, a 13-pitch at bat by Mackensy Lakian that featured eight foul balls resulted in a walk for the senior. Parker got on when a slap-hit to third by the Ankeny, Iowa, native put runners on first and second with one out.
Lynch hit a ball to the warning track that the Saint Peter's right fielder was able to track down for the second out of the seventh, but Lakian tagged up to put runners on the corners with two away. The next batter, Alix Cook, tallied her third hit of the game with a liner to center, plating Lakian and giving Columbia the 1-0 walk-off win.
Wu put together one of the best performances of her career in the circle, going the full seven innings and giving up just two hits and striking out six for her sixth win of the season.
Game two: Columbia 10, Saint Peter's 2
Columbia would also win game two in walk-off fasion, only this time, the game would take only five innings.
The momentum from the game one win helped the bats to get off to a fast start in game two, as the Lions plated two runs in the bottom of the first.
Cook doubled to right center on the first pitch she saw, and Parker followed that up with her first career hit, a single to third base. Both Cook and Parker would score in the inning to put the Lions up 2-1 after one.
In the bottom of the second, the home bats exploded for four runs. Shelby Unger drove three runs in when Madison Gott, Parker and Cook touched home plate on a bases-clearing double.
With Columbia out in front by a 6-2 score in the bottom of the fourth, Gott came in on a fielder's choice from Lakian, and a Jackie Li single scored Unger to extend the Lion lead.
After Kayla Maloney scored on a Saint Peter's error to give Columbia a 9-2 lead, Lynch made it another walk-off win as an RBI single scored Parker to make it an eight-run lead in the fifth, ending the game.
Parker led the way in her first career start, going 3-for-4 with three runs in the second game. Cook again came through with a 2-for-3 performance and two runs, while Unger talled four RBI in the contest.
Tessa Kroll picked up the win in game two, giving up two runs in five innings while striking out five for her sixth win of the season.
With the pair of wins, the Lions improve to 13-21 on the season. Up next, Cornell visits the Columbia Softball Stadium at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, as the Lions fight for position in the Ivy League South.
