LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. - Tonia Wu smacked a home run in the top of the eighth to help Columbia to a 3-2 win over Rider in the first game, before the Broncs took game two, 9-2, in the final road doubleheader of the season.
Game 1: Columbia 3, Rider 2
After a 2-2 tie forced extra innings, Wu powered Columbia to the win, smacking her third homerun of the season in the top of the eighth inning to put the Lions up by one.
Wu started in the circle for Columbia, but did not factor in the decision after a solid outing. The sophomore went 6.1 innings and gave up two earned runs before being replaced by Kayla Maloney with the score tied in the seventh. Maloney tallied her second win of the season thanks to the blast by Wu, as the late inning replacement retired five of six batters for the win.
Seniors Alix Cook and Mackensy Lakian both went 2-for-4 in the contest, while Kerry Cook joined her old sister by scoring one run.
Game 2: Rider 9, Columbia 3
The home team took a 1-0 lead off pitcher Tessa Kroll in the first inning, but Columbia would tie the game up in the third thanks to more timely hitting from Wu. With runners on first and second, Wu singled to left driving in Madison Gott to tie the game.
In the bottom half of the third, a defensive error ended up loading the bases for Rider. Allysen Breeden of the Broncs would capitalize, knocking a three-run shot out of the park, pushing the lead to 4-1.
Liz Caggiano kept Columbia alive in the next inning, tallying her first home run of the season to right field, making it a 4-2 ballgame.
Kroll would put up zeros in the fourth an fifth inning, before Rider was able to add five runs in the sixth. Maloney again came on in the sixth, but would not have the same amount of success as she did in game one. The sixth inning ended with Rider up 9-3, which would be the final score.
Despite only three runs in game two, the entire lineup was able to get a hit in the second contest, as Columbia finished the game with 12 hits. Alix Cook, Taylor Troutt and Caggiano had two hits each.
The Lions are back in action this weekend, when Penn travels to Columbia for a 12:30 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday. The two teams will meet again in Philadelphia the following day at the same time.
