NEW YORK - The Columbia softball team rebounded to take the second half of a conference doubleheader against Penn, 5-3, after falling 9-0 in game one. With the split, the Lions are now 16-26 overall and 7-11 in the Ivy League.
Game one was highlighted by a strong performance from the Penn pitcher, Alexis Borden. Columbia was unable to get a hit off Borden until the seventh inning, when Madison Gott singled down the left field line. At that point, it would be too late for the Lions, as Penn held a 9-0 lead at the start of the inning.
Kerry Cook and Gott would get stranded in the inning, and Penn would move on to game two with a 9-0 win.
Tessa Kroll earned the game two win, picking up her seventh victory of the season in a complete game, during which she surrendered just two earned runs. Shelby Unger came up big at the plate with a 3-for-3 performance, adding an RBI and scoring the go-ahead run in the fourth inning.
Prior to the start of the doubheleader, the Columbia softball program took a moment to honor seniors Liz Caggiano, Alix Cook, Mackensy Lakian and Kayla Shimoda, who laced up their cleats for the final time at Columbia Softball Stadium.
Tomorrow, the Lions will take on Penn in the final two games of the season, in a 12:30 p.m. doubleheader at Penn.
