All nine batters were able to reach base in the game-two victory while eight different Lions were able to record hits in the win.
GAME ONE RECAP: Penn 4, Columbia 1
The Quakers came out of the gate attacking in the bottom of the first with a pair of hits and a walk to load the bases with nobody out, but after a trip to the mound by Coach Teague, Tessa Kroll was able to work a liner to short where Maddie Gott could make the play and fire to third to complete the double play.
Unfortunately the Quakers were able to put across three runs in the bottom of the second before Kroll could get a strikeout to end the inning and send it to the third with Penn on top, 3-0.
With the help of back-to-back doubles in the bottom of the fourth, Penn was able to plate another run while holding the Lions to only a pair of hits to take a 4-0 lead into the seventh.
Down to their final three outs, the Lions began to battle back as Taylor Troutt opened up the top of the seventh with a solo home run down the left-field line to cut the deficit to 4-1. While Bonnie Schipper was able to work a one-out walk, the Quakers were able to get out of the inning to seal a 4-1 victory.
Alexa Sargent (12-7) earned the win after throwing a complete game for the Quakers, giving up only one run on three hits while striking out nine. Tessa Kroll (5-16) took the loss after giving up four runs on 12 hits while striking out a pair.
Along with Troutt's home run in the seventh, Reilly Metzger and Maddie Gott were able to pick up the only two other hits for the Lions while Bonnie Schipper and Alexandra Yule each worked a walk.
GAME TWO RECAP: Columbia 6, Penn 0
The Columbia offense wasted no time attacking as Taylor Troutt was able to lead off the top of the second with a base hit into the right-center gap. After Jordan Townsend was able to bunt Troutt over to second, Bonnie Schipper was able to drive a RBI single back up the middle to score Troutt and put Columbia on the board first.
The Lions were not done there either as they rallied with three more hits, including a two-RBI single by Kerry Cook, to make it a 3-0 ball game heading into the bottom of the second.
Penn looked as if they were able to threaten in the bottom of the third with runners on the corners and one out, but Alexandra Yule was able to fire to second on a double-steal attempt to get the first runner before Maddie Gott could return the throw home, completing the double play to send the game to the fourth.
While the Lions gave up four hits over the first four innings, a solid defensive effort that included a diving grab in center by Krystin Wong helped send the game to the fifth with Columbia still leading, 3-0.
With momentum built up from Wong's catch the frame prior, rookie Jordan Townsend was able to extend the Columbia lead to 4-0 with a solo shot to straight-away center, just over the 210-foot wall.
Looking to extend their lead in the seventh, the Lions were able to take advantage of a Penn error to open the inning before back-to-back RBI doubles by Maddie Gott and Taylor Troutt gave Columbia a 6-0 advantage.
Although the Quakers were able to threaten with a pair of runners on and nobody out, Maura Lynch was able to hang tough and get the final three outs to preserve the 6-0 shutout and earn her first Ivy League win of the season.
Lynch (2-1) picked up the win after throwing seven shutout innings, allowing six hits while striking out a batter. Lauren Li (5-5) took the loss after throwing 2.0 innings of work, giving up three runs on five hits while striking out one.
Taylor Troutt (2-for-3) and Bonnie Schipper (2-for-4) each picked up a pair of hits while six other batters recorded hits in the win.
The Lions will round out the regular season on Saturday, April 30, as they welcome the Quakers to the Columbia Softball Stadium for a doubleheader starting at 12:30 p.m.
