NEW YORK – Despite a three-run fourth inning that included a home run by Maddie Gott, the Columbia softball team (7-20) fell short to Stony Brook, 10-6, on Wednesday afternoon.
The Lions had seven different batters combine for hits while eight of the team's nine batters reached base in the loss after posting seven hits and eight walks on the day.
After Tessa Kroll was able to sit the Seawolves down in order to open the first, the Lions were able to take advantage of a two-out error in the bottom half of the frame as Maddie Gott reached base on the Stony Brook mistake, extending the inning to let Taylor Troutt knock a RBI double into left and give Columbia the early 1-0 lead.
Maura Lynch kept the offense going in the bottom of the second with a leadoff double down the left-field line and with the help of another Stony Brook error, the Lions were able to plate another run and make it a 2-0 advantage into the third.
Unfortunately the Seawolves were able to take advantage of a Columbia error to open the top of the third before Alexandra Pisciotta could send a two-out, three-run home run down the right-field line to put Stony Brook in front, 3-2.
The Seawolves weren't done there, however, as they posted up four more runs on four hits and another Columbia error in the fourth to make it a 7-2 Stony Brook lead.
Columbia began to respond in the bottom half of the fourth as Jordan Townsend opened things up with a five-pitch walk before Krystin Wong could send a base hit down the left-field line to put a pair on with nobody out. Facing a 2-0 count, Kerry Cook was able to send a double into the left-center gap and Maddie Gott was able to blast a homer over the left-field line, capping a three-run fourth for the Lions.
Unfortunately the Seawolves put across three more runs over the next two innings and despite a RBI double in the sixth by Alexandra Yule, the Lions were unable to come back as they dropped the midweek matchup, 10-6.
Maddy Neales (4-5) earned the win after 3.2 innings of work, giving up three earned runs on five hits while walking four. Tessa Kroll (1-10) took the loss after allowing 10 runs, eight earned, on 11 hits while striking out seven.
The Lions will return to action this weekend as they head up to New Engalnd to play Harvard and Dartmouth in a pair of doubleheaders.
