NEW ORLEANS, La. — Behind a career-high four RBIs from Jack Kail and a combined 4.2 scoreless innings from Will Parkinson and Justin Tucker, Columbia baseball defeated Tulane, 7-3, on Friday at Greer Field at Turchin Stadium.
Lions starting pitcher Andy Leon went 4.1 innings, allowing three runs on three hits and striking out a career-high nine batters in the series-opening win. Leon, Parkinson, and Tucker combined for 17 strikeouts. The trio held Tulane batters to just four hits and stranded eight base runners. Parkinson picked up his second win of the season for Columbia (6-7). Tulane falls to 3-15 on the season.
At the plate, Griffin Palfrey recorded two hits and drove in two runs. Hayden Schott was 3-for-5 with his first career triple and is now batting .436 this season. Anton Lazits had two hits and two runs scored while Cole Hage scored twice and tripled.
Kail got the Lions on the board first for the 10th straight game with his first career extra-base hit. Anton Lazits and Seth Dardar scored to open up a 2-0 lead. The next batter later, Palfrey singled Kail home to make it 3-0 in the second inning.
Tulane then got on the board in the bottom half of the inning. Back-to-back doubles from Brennan Lambert and Jake LaPrairie made it 3-1. The Green Wave loaded the bases with one out but Leon struck out back-to-back hitters to escape the jam.
Leon had eight strikeouts through four innings. In the fifth, Leon ran into similar trouble after walking the bases load to start the inning. After Leon struck out Jackson Lynn, Parkinson was brought into the game. A wild pitch scored Gavin Schulz to make it 3-2. Lambert was hit by a pitch the next batter later to tie the game.
Columbia re-gained the lead with three runs in the sixth. With the bases loaded, Kail walked to drive in his third run of the game and give the Lions a 4-3 lead. The next two runs were produced without the ball leaving the infield, as Palfrey recorded an infield single and Andy Blake grounded out to give Columbia a 6-3 advantage.
Kail's career night continued when he drove in his fourth run of the game on a sacrifice fly to bolster Columbia's lead to 7-3. Hage came across for his second run of the night.
Columbia continues the three-game series with Tulane on Saturday with first pitch set for 7 p.m. ET from Greer Field at Turchin Stadium.
