The Lions received a strong start from Alex Sotiropoulos and three hits from Cole Fellows in the victory over the Quakers
NEW HAVEN, Conn. — Columbia baseball grinded out a 6-3 win over No. 2 Penn to stay alive in the Ivy League Tournament on Saturday afternoon at George H.W. Bush Field. With the victory, the Lions will face either top-seeded Yale or No. 3 Yale on Sunday, May 17, at 12 p.m. for a spot in the championship round.
Starter Alex Sotiropoulos (2-4) gave the Lions (16-24-1) a quality start, allowing three runs on nine hits while striking out seven. Cole Fellows paced the offense, going 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.
Columbia applied pressure throughout the game, putting a runner on base in every inning. Additionally, all 10 Lions who recorded an at-bat reached base at least once.
Penn (20-22) got on the board in the top of the first after consecutive two-out doubles by Gavin Degnan and Nick Spaventa, but the Lions responded immediately in the bottom half to take the lead.
Jack Kail and Fellows each worked walks before Owen Estabrook lined a single to left to score Kail and tie the game at 1-1. Jackson Brewer followed with another RBI single to plate Fellows and put Columbia in front. An infield single by Jimmy Chadwell loaded the bases, but Penn escaped further damage with a double play to keep it a one-run game.
The Quakers answered in the second, using a leadoff double and a wild pitch to put a runner on third with no outs. Sotiropoulos struck out a pair, but Nick O'Brien singled up the middle to even the score at 2-2.
Columbia quickly regained control with a three-run second inning. With runners on second and third and one out, Anthony Temesvary shot an opposite-field single to right to drive in a run before Fellows followed with a two-run single up the middle to extend the lead to 5-2.
Sotiropoulos worked around a pair of singles in the third for his first scoreless inning and settled in from there, highlighted by a 1-2-3 sixth inning with two strikeouts.
The Lions added an insurance run in the sixth when Temesvary scored on a wild pitch to push the lead to 6-2. Penn got a run back in the seventh on a Jarrett Pokrovsky double to trim the deficit to three.
Will Harrigan entered in the eighth and retired six of the seven batters he faced while striking out four to slam the door and earn his second save of the season.
Penn starter Ben Moulin (2-3) allowed five runs over two innings in the loss. Columbia also drew eight walks against the Quakers' pitching staff.
