The Lions fell 12-3 to the Bulldogs on Friday afternoon
The Lions (15-24-1) will play either No. 2 Penn or No. 3 Brown in an elimination game on Saturday, May 16. First pitch is slated for 12 p.m. on ESPN+.
Jack Kail went 2-for-5 with a run scored, while Anthony Temesvary posted a pair of doubles in the defeat.
The Lions jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, using a leadoff single by Kail and a double by Temesvary to put two runners in scoring position. With the infield back, a groundout by Jackson Brewer drove in the first run of the tournament.
In the bottom of the first, Yale (28-13-1) capitalized on a pair of errors on the same play to take a 2-1 advantage. After a leadoff walk, Chris DiPrima grounded a ball behind the bag at third that was overthrown, allowing the runner from first to score. DiPrima then raced toward third, and another errant throw allowed him to come home with the go-ahead run.
A two-out rally in the top of the third helped Columbia draw even. Temesvary ripped a double off the wall in left and came around to score on a Cole Fellows base hit to make it 2-2.
The top of the Bulldogs' order gave Yale the lead back in the bottom of the frame. A hit batter and walk put two on before Jack Dauer rolled a single through the left side to put the Bulldogs in front, 3-2.
Columbia had an opportunity to tie the game in the fourth after a Hunter Snyder leadoff double. However, Yale starter Jack Ohman struck out the next two batters and induced a pop-up to keep the Bulldogs in front before Yale added insurance runs later in the inning.
DiPrima was once again in the middle of the action, clearing the bases with a two-out double to center to extend Yale's advantage to 6-2.
The Lions threatened again in the fifth, putting two runners in scoring position on a Kail double, a Brewer walk and a wild pitch with two outs. Ohman, though, battled back from a 3-0 count to induce another pop-up and end the threat.
The Bulldogs added runs in the fifth and seventh innings, while reliever Teo Spadaccini tossed three perfect innings to stifle the Columbia offense. Yale then plated four runs in the eighth to put the game away.
Thomas Santana (5-5) took the loss after allowing four earned runs on four hits over 3.2 innings. Ohman scattered seven hits and allowed two runs over 5.0 innings to improve to 5-2 on the season.
