The Lions’ Ivy League Tournament run comes to an end in tight contest
NEW HAVEN, Conn. — No. 3 Brown held off Columbia baseball, 4-2, to end the Lions' Ivy League Tournament run Sunday afternoon at George H.W. Bush Field.
Columbia (16-25-1) brought the go-ahead run to the plate in the ninth inning, but Brown's Christian Keel induced a game-ending groundout to send the Bears (23-19) to the championship round against top-seeded Yale.
The Lions retired the first two batters in the bottom of the first before Brown loaded the bases on two walks and a single. Another free pass gave the Bears a 1-0 lead, but Owen Estabrook picked off a runner at third to limit the damage.
Columbia threatened in the fifth after putting runners on the corners with one out. Jack Kail lifted a fly ball to right field and Hunter Snyder attempted to score on the tag, but Alex Benevento delivered a strike to the plate to end the inning and preserve Brown's lead.
Will Harrigan tossed four scoreless innings out of the bullpen to keep the Lions within striking distance before Brown broke through in the sixth. A pair of one-out hits and an intentional walk loaded the bases, and Christian Butera lined a two-run single to extend the advantage. The Bears added another run on a sacrifice fly to make it 4-0.
The Lions threatened again in the seventh after an error and a Charlie Slabaugh single put runners on first and second with two outs. Tate Vogler singled to center, which would have loaded the bases, but Columbia was caught in a rundown between second and third. During the pickle, Jimmy Chadwell was thrown out at the plate for the final out of the inning.
Columbia mounted one final push in the ninth. Estabrook reached on an error before Snyder worked a one-out walk. Slabaugh broke up the shutout with an RBI single to center, and Vogler followed with a fielder's choice that scored pinch-runner Jaden Santiago from third to cut the deficit to 4-2. Brown, however, escaped the rally with a slow roller to first base to end the game.
Cole Fellows went 2-for-4 and Snyder added a pair of hits in the loss.
