PHILADELPHIA — The Columbia men's soccer team went on the road to challenge No. 20 Penn in its 2024 Ivy League opener but was defeated, 1-0, Saturday night at Rhodes Field.
The game's only goal was scored in the 52nd minute. Following a goal kick sent to midfield by the Lions, Penn (6-1-1, 1-0-0 Ivy) gained control and Patrick Cayelli came away with it near midfield. He flicked the ball ahead for Romeo Dahlen, who got in behind Columbia's back line and chipped a shot over the oncoming Alexander O'Brien that landed in the back of the net.
The goal was the lone blemish on an otherwise solid night for the first-year Columbia keeper. O'Brien made five saves, matching his season-high from FDU, including a few dazzling stops in the first half to keep the game scoreless.
The Lions (0-7-0, 0-1-0 Ivy) play their first home match of the Ivy season next Saturday, Oct. 5, hosting Yale (3-4-1, 1-0-0) at 7 p.m.
