Baseball Sweeps Sunday Doubleheader at San Diego

The Lions combine for 28 runs on 22 hits in sweep

SAN DIEGO, Calif. — Columbia baseball edged San Diego, 9-8, in game one of Sunday's doubleheader at Fowler Park before crushing the Toreros in game two, 19-10.

Columbia (3-10) and San Diego (3-16) play the series finale on Monday at 3 p.m. ET.

Game 1 Recap

Sam Miller drove in the game-winning runs in the eighth inning with a two-run single. The Lions trailed 8-5 heading into the inning, but Tate Vogler plated the first run on a wild pitch. Jack Kail grounded out to bring another run home and cut the lead to 8-7, setting the stage for Miller to deliver the go-ahead knock.

Ray Huke nailed down his first career save, finishing a scoreless final two innings and striking out two.

Kail opened the scoring three batters into the game with a sacrifice fly that plated Ben Fishel. San Diego answered in the second inning off Lions starter Joe Sheets with a two-run triple to go in front, 2-1.

In the top of the third, an Anton Lazits sacrifice fly tied the game at 2-2. After the Toreros went ahead 6-2 after a four-run fourth inning, Columbia cut the lead down to one in the sixth. Lazits and Miller homered back-to-back, with Miller's being an inside-the-park home run. The Lions also scored on a fielder's choice off the bat of Hunter Snyder.

Columbia threatened more in the seventh by getting two men on, but Jackson Brewer was robbed of extra bases by a diving catch in right field to end the inning.

Game 2 Recap

Columbia jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the fourth inning. Lazits started the inning with a solo home run, then Anthony Temesvary belted an RBI double. San Diego itched back and made it a 7-4 game through six innings.

The Lions broke it open with a six-run seventh inning and went ahead, 13-4. Lazits went deep for the third time on the day. Temesvary, Snyder, and Palfrey each tacked on RBI singles.

Jagger Edwards got the start on the mound for Columbia and allowed three runs on four hits. The senior struck out six Toreros.

Kyle Corso broke it open in the ninth with a grand slam that cleared the left field fence. The Lions posted six runs in the inning.
