The Lions only register two hits; Sheets impresses over five innings
EUGENE, Ore. — Columbia baseball fell to No. 11 Oregon, 7-0, in Sunday's series finale from PK Park.
The Lions' starting pitcher Joe Sheets hurled five innings of one-run ball. The senior captain surrendered five hits and struck out four. Columbia's two hits on the afternoon went to Sam Miller in the first and Jack Kail in the ninth. Cole Fellows reached base twice with a pair of walks.
Oregon (10-2) took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on an RBI single from Ryan Cooney. Columbia (1-6) got a runner to second base in the fourth and sixth innings but couldn't capitalize either time.
In the seventh inning, the Ducks added a pair of insurance runs off Griffin Palfrey. A hit by pitch with the bases loaded and fielder's choice plated two to put Oregon up 3-0. Oregon scored four more in the eighth.
The Lions got two runners on in the ninth but pinch-hitter Tate Vogler went down swinging to end the game.
Columbia travels to No. 6 Georgia next weekend for a three-game series. First pitch in Athens on Friday is set for 3 p.m.
