Kyra Mason has a solid day at the plate for Columbia
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Columbia softball team got its 2026 season underway on Friday, taking on App State and tournament host UNC Greensboro on day one of the Spiro Classic. App State took the opener 12-0 in five innings. In game two of Friday's doubleheader, UNCG took the nightcap, winning 8-3.
"Clearly the scores aren't what we want them to be," head coach Jennifer Teague said, "But we definitely made some progress just focusing on the process of what the season will look like. Against App State, we didn't have a great game, and in the second game, we had a few innings that didn't look great. But overall, we made progress at the plate, and we are encouraged about what's ahead of us."
GAME ONE RECAP
App State (6-0) took control of the game early thanks to a historic day from infielder Makayla McClain, who accounted for eight RBIs on two swings of the bat.
McClain's grand slam in the second made it 4-0 Mountainners. She put the game on ice with her second grand slam in as many innings in the top of the third, giving the Mountaineers a 10-0 advantage.
Mads Lawson (0-1) took the loss. The first-year pitcher went 2.1 innings, allowing six hits, 10 runs, eight of them earned, with four walks and four strikeouts. Caylene Nguyen and Charlotte Laidler pitched the final 2.2 innings.
GAME TWO RECAP
Against the Spartans, Columbia (0-2) once again could not avoid the big inning. UNC Greensboro (2-5) scored four runs in the bottom of the third inning thanks to a 2-run double from Laney Deane and a 2-run home run from Nya South.
The Lions' offense had plenty of opportunities to put up a crooked number, but base running was the difference. Columba ran into four outs on the base paths against UNCG.
Kyra Mason finished off a strong day at the plate, smashing a 2-run home run in the top of the seventh. It was the first home run of her career. Payton Shimansky scored the Lions' other run with an RBI single in the fourth.
Emmy Davis (0-1) took the loss. She battled her way through 5.1 innings, allowing seven hits, six runs, all earned, with a strikeout.
