Lions close out Spiro Classic on Sunday against Fairfield
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Columbia softball team had a much stronger showing on the second day of the Spiro Classic, but it was not enough as the Lions fell to App State 4-2 in the opener and 2-1 to Fairfield in game two.
Columbia (0-4) got strong pitching from both starters, and the offense showed patience, but the hits weren't falling.
"Not the start wins and losses wise that we wanted obviously, but we showed some progress in many areas this weekend," head coach Jennifer Teague said. "We are excited to get home, work on some things and get to Florida with another opportunity to prepare for League play. I thought we had some really good pitching performances today. Overall, we competed better today."
GAME ONE RECAP
The Lions got a strong pitching performance from junior Lily McCord (0-1). McCord kept App State (8-0) off the scoreboard for 2.2 innings before surrendering three runs in the bottom of the third.
McCord finished the day, tossing 5.1 innings, allowing four earned runs with six walks and three strikeouts. The 5.1 innings pitched is tied for the second-longest outing of her career.
Columbia struck first, scoring two in the top of the third. Brianna Santangelo got the rally started with a base hit to shallow center field, her first collegiate hit. The Lions loaded up the bags when Eleni Katsivalis drew a walk, and Sarah Mikami got hit by a pitch. Tatum Hubble and Payton Shimansky notched RBIs without taking the bat off their shoulders when a pitch hit Hubble, and Shimansky was walked with the bags full.
Mountaineers starter Sophia Moshos (4-0) was able to get out of the jam without further damage and went on to earn the win, tossing 7.0 complete, scattering two hits, and two runs while striking out six.
GAME TWO RECAP
Mads Lawson (0-2) rebounded after a tough start on Friday. The first-year pitcher went 6.0 complete, scattering nine hits, two runs, with a walk and seven strikeouts. Lawson was particularly stingy with runners in scoring position, holding the Stags to 2-for-13 in that situation.
As they did in the opener, the Lions scored the game's opening runs. Savanna Messner walked in a run in the top of the first after the Lions worked the bags full.
Columbia could not get that hit it desperately needed, and Faifield (3-4) was able to get out of the jam.
In the fifth, the Stags broke through when Anna Paravati singled through the right side to drive in a pair.
That was all the run support that starter Alyssa Weinberg (2-2) needed. She went the distance, scattering five hits and a run over seven innings with four walks and four strikeouts.
UP NEXT
Sunday's game against Fairfield has been canceled due to heavy rains in the area. The Lions return to action on Friday, Feb. 20, when they take on St. John's in the opener of the Stetson Invitational in DeLand, Fla.
