Starter dominated in the circle and at the plate last week for the Lions
PRINCETON, N.J. – Columbia softball first-year pitcher Mads Lawson has been named the Ivy League Co-Rookie of the Week. Lawson shares the award with Princeton's Mia Valenzuela.
Lawson was instrumental in the Lions' 4-1 week, which included an Ivy League series win over Brown, culminating with a thrilling 12-6 win in extra innings on a rain-soaked Sunday in Providence.
The native of Rancho Murieta, Calif., shone both at the plate and in the circle for the Lions. As a pitcher, she went 1-0 with a 1.24 ERA, holding opponents to a .162 average in 11.1 innings pitched. At the plate, she hit .571, going 4-for-7 with two runs scored and two RBI.
In her first start of the week, Lawson threw three shutout innings in a no-decision against LIU. Scheduled just to pitch three innings, Lawson struck out four and held the Sharks to one hit. She faced just one batter over the minimum.
Her best start came in a pitcher's duel in game one of the Brown series on Saturday. In that contest, Lawson, who made her first Ivy League start, tossed a 3-hit complete game shutout. It was the first complete game shutout of her collegiate career. She also struck out eight, matching a career-high.
In three starts, Lawson was stellar at pitching with traffic on the bases. Holding opponents to 1-for-10 with runners on base.
Lawson is 5-5 on the year with a 3.45 ERA. Her eight complete games and 61 strikeouts both lead the Ivy League.
Columbia returns to action on Saturday when they host Princeton for a three-game series. Game one of Saturday's doubleheader is scheduled for a 12:30 p.m. first pitch.
