
Columbia Baseball Falls to No. 23 West Virginia

MORGANTOWN, W. Va. — A six-run second inning proved decisive as No. 23 West Virginia defeated Columbia baseball, 16–1, on Sunday afternoon. Columbia fell to 2-7 while WVU moved to 10-3.
The Lions totaled nine hits in the contest, with junior Lucas Jackson leading the way with two.
The Mountaineers capitalized in the second inning after a throwing error allowed the leadoff batter to reach base. Sean Smith followed with an RBI single to left field to put West Virginia on the board before the Mountaineers continued to generate traffic on the bases. Matt Ineich later broke the game open with a grand slam to left field, as West Virginia plated six runs and never looked back.
Columbia got on the board in the third inning when Jackson Brewer reached on a fielder's choice. Cole Fellows crossed the plate on the play to trim the margin to 6-1.
West Virginia continued to extend its lead in the third inning when Matt Ineich delivered a two-run single to left field, pushing the Mountaineers ahead 8-1. The Mountaineers added another run in the fourth on Armani Guzman's sacrifice fly before plating one more in the fifth to make it 10-1.
West Virginia stretched the advantage further in the seventh with two runs on bases-loaded walks and capped the scoring in the eighth with three runs, highlighted by Sam White's RBI double and a run-scoring single from Gavin Kelly.
First-year Jack Korthas (0-1) made his first career start, working 2.0 innings and recording two strikeouts.
West Virginia starter Maxx Yehl (2-0) earned the win after tossing six innings, allowing one run on five hits while striking out nine.
UP NEXT
Columbia will continue its road trip next weekend with a four-game series against South Florida in Tampa. The series begins Friday, March 13, at 6:30 p.m. on ESPN+.
