Mads Lawson tosses second consecutive complete game shutout
NEW YORK – The Columbia softball team split its series-opening doubleheader against Yale on Saturday, taking game one 6-0 on the back of Mads Laswon's three-hit shutout. In the nightcap, the Bulldogs evened up the series, winning 6-2.
Columbia (14-17, 6-5) finished the day scoring eight runs on 13 hits; most of that production came in the opener, when the Lions finished with six runs on eight hits. Tatum Hubble continues to swing a hot bat; the Lions' catcher went 2-for-5 on the day with a double. Kyra Mason also went 2-for-5 with a double and two runs scored.
Sarah Mikami hit her third home run of the season in the opener. She now has 15 for her career, which is tied for eighth most in program history with former Lion Liz Caggiano (2012-15). Juju O'Brien extends her team-leading hit streak to 11 games.
Game One Recap
Columbia took the opener behind a breakout middle-inning surge and strong pitching.
After two scoreless frames, the Lions erupted for four runs in the third, capitalizing on Yale defensive miscues and timely hits to seize control. Caylene Nguyen reached on an error to drive in the first run of the rally before Sarah Mikami followed with an RBI single. Juju O'Brien later delivered a two-run single up the middle to cap the inning and give Columbia separation.
The four-run cushion was more than enough for Lawson (8-6), who went the distance, tossing a 3-hit complete game shutout. She is the first Columbia pitcher to toss consecutive complete-game shutouts in back-to-back starts since Brook Darling did it March 28 and 30, 2014, in starts against Brown and Yale.
Lawson got into trouble at the top of the first inning, hitting the leadoff batter. Yale (12-24, 4-10 Ivy) got runners in scoring position before Lawson shut the door. From the top of the first to midway through the fourth, she retired nine in a row.
She finished the day, going 7.0 complete, scattering three hits, with a walk and eight strikeouts. The eight strikeouts give her 93 on the year; she is now three strikeouts shy of cracking the top-10 for strikeouts in a single season in Columbia history.
Mikami's home run in the fifth punctuated a solid offensive game for the Lions.
The loss was charged to Bulldogs' starter Emma Taylor (4-10).
Game Two Recap
The Lions jumped out to an early 1-0 lead thanks to an RBI single down the right field line from Alica Marzouca. Columbia left the bags full, allowing Yale starter Ellie Joseph (6-9) to escape the jam.
From there, Joseph settled down and held the Lions scoreless for four innings, en route to a 2-run complete game.
Yale backed its starter with a five-run third inning, which started with a solo home run from Joseph. A walk and a single put two aboard for Jane Littleton, who ended Lily McCord's day with a 3-run home run off the scoreboard.
McCord (2-7) made quick work of the Bulldogs in the first and second but could not get out of the third.
Yale added a run in the fifth when they loaded the bases with no outs. Lions' relief pitcher Charlotte Laidler did a brilliant job limiting the damage. She entered the game with the bases full and no outs and escaped with just the one run scored.
Columbia added a run in the fifth when the first three runners reached, but an RBI from Mikami on a fielder's choice was all they could get across the plate.
Sunday's rubber match is scheduled for a 12:35 p.m. first pitch.
